Bottom Line: Public utilities reimburse ratepayers for the extra cost of buying energy efficient products.
Because of an innovative "decoupling" revenue model, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) can actually make money by selling less of its product - energy! Lucky for you, this can save you lots of money and helps the environment! PG&E has a host of incentive programs and rebates to encourage its business and residential customers to conserve energy. The number of incentive programs and rebates are too many to list, but here are a few to get you started:
- The SmartAC program offers a free programmable thermostat ($300 value) to customers who sign up. Customers agree to let PG&E remotely reduce the temperature on the thermostat for a few minutes to avoid rolling black outs during peak demand hours. Programmable thermostats provide customers with countless opportunities to regulate their energy usage.
- The ClimateSmart program allows homeowners to balance out their home's greenhouse gas emissions through conservation, restoration, and protection projects. Homeowners make a voluntary, tax-deductible donation (around $5 a month) on their bill.
- Rebate Programs - PG&E helps customers pay to install a number of energy saving solutions from a cool roof to an ENERGY STAR rated water heater in their home. All they require is a copy of the appliance receipt and rebate application. PG&E truly sells efficiency!
