Bottom Line: Local organizations like Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) are preserving some of the world’s most important areas of open space. What do they do and how can you support them?

Junk Food in Schools

Both Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and POST exist primarily to preserve areas of undeveloped land in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties for recreation use and habitat.

From POST’s website, they state that: "Using funds from private donors, we move quickly to purchase critical open spaces as opportunities arise. Private dollars also enable us to leverage matching funds from state and federal agencies to secure the Peninsula's precious natural legacy. Applying this successful formula, POST is protecting one of the world's last remaining accessible rural coastlines near a major metropolitan area."

In the same way, the mission of the District is to "…purchase, permanently protect, and restore lands forming a regional open space greenbelt, preserve unspoiled wilderness, wildlife habitat, watershed, viewshed, and fragile ecosystems, and provide opportunities for low-intensity recreation and environmental education."

Both of these organizations—and others like them in the County—provide for ample opportunity to both enjoy open space as well as contribute to their mission. Below you can find ways to volunteer, donate, or just take advantage of the dozens of areas of pristine open space near you.
