Sustainability is a simple idea with big implications. With all the information and ideas floating around, figuring out how to move towards your sustainability goals may seem overwhelming.

The County of Sonoma in partnership with Brown and Caldwell Environmental Engineers and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District have created a guidebook for public agencies focusing on the issues of and best practices for sustainability in energy usage. This guide is directed at the unique challenges faced by public agencies, and is an effort to help agencies both as a source of background information and for ideas on where to begin.

Topics discussed include general information on climate change, California Assembly Bill 32, and greenhouse gas emissions and inventories.

Best practices are discussed for greenhouse gas emissions, energy management (including buildings and alternative energy sources), water supply and distribution (including use reduction, distribution systems and the water-energy nexus), waste stream management (including biodegradable waste, e-waste and construction waste), and financial considerations that describe methods to implement these best practices.
