It’s been said that you can measure the compassion of a community by the way it cares for its elderly. Two non-profit organizations on the San Mateo Coast address those needs by providing seniors with health care, camaraderie, education and a hot lunch every day.

As Half Moon Bay’s Coastside Adult Health Center describes its mission: To keep people as healthy, active and independent as possible, when advancing years or physical / mental conditions call for extra care and attention. Their goal: To help restore and maintain mental and physical health, which will enhance the quality of life for our participants and their caregivers.

The Health Center facility provides a wide range of clinical services, social work assistance and a daily hot lunch. The services may be paid via Medi-Cal or other insurance plans, or they will arrange for sliding-scale rates when needed. They have a very dedicated volunteer contingent, plus a professional staff, many of whom work a substantial number of unpaid hours to assist with patients as needed.

Also in Half Moon Bay, Senior Coastsiders runs classes and events, provides transportation to medical facilities and grocery stores, meals-on-wheels and home repair assistance. The organization runs on a case management system in which social workers consult, advise and assist individuals and families on a wide range of issues, including services and programs available in our community, housing, health insurance, and managing the activities of daily living such as preparing meals and paying bills.

Senior Coastsiders provides its services free of charge to all seniors living on the Coastside from Pacifica to Pescadero.

These two organizations demonstrate the caring of a community that values its elderly. They help maintain the uniqueness of San Mateo County and preserve the values that make this such a great place to live.
