Rentalic
Rentalic is a San Mateo based website that enables people to post and rent out their everyday goods and services to their communities and neighborhoods. Rentalic's mission is to promote renting and re-use of goods as an alternative to buying and creating new products so we can minimize the creation of new waste. Rentalic’s concept of “Rent. Share. Be Green.” has been featured in Treehugger, PlanetGreen, The Sierra Club blog, The Boston Globe and other notable media outlets. In 2009, Rentalic won the Maker Faire’s Editor Choice Award for original idea and won the PayPal X Developer Challenge for innovative technology in March 2010. Earth can only sustain between four and five acres of resources per person, but the average American's ecological footprint is nearly 24 acres. Yet, we continue to accumulate an abundance of items and clutter.
Rentalic's philosophy of "Rent. Share. Be Green" encourages people to reconsider their consumption habits and support sharing of resources locally over purchasing of new products. The Rentalic model also helps owners earn money from renting out their goods and borrowers save money while concurrently reducing our overall carbon footprint. Additionally, by renting locally, money stays within the local economy and strengthens neighborhood relations.
