San Mateo County Pharmaceutical Drug Disposal

Offers the public a convenient way for the proper disposal of expired or otherwise unwanted pharmaceuticals through participating local law enforcement agencies. Anyone can drop off unused drugs at any of 12 police departments or 2 Sheriff's Dept locations. Large white metal receptacles, similar to postal drop boxes, are publicly accessible at each location during their regular hours.

Sustainable Attributes (Economic, Environmental and Social)
The three main goals of the program are (1) help seniors avoid dangerous medication dosage errors (which might be a result of retaining drugs no longer needed); (2)help reduce or prevent recreational pharmaceutical use (or overuse of inappropriate drugs, such as antibiotics); (3) help stop the continuing contamination of the environment by myriad medicines flushed down countless drains every day. Most sewage treatment facilities are not designed to filter out medicines; as a result, everything from antibiotics to the hormones found in birth control pills is showing up in fish and amphibians (so-call "indicator species").
