Bottom Line: The placement of water filling stations can reduce the use of plastic bottles.

Water filling stations of flavored water and regular water are located in the cafeteria of Notre Dame de Namur University to reduce the use of plastic water bottles on campus. Everyday three large containers of flavored water are in the cafeteria, free of charge, for students and faculty to refill their water. The flavors vary from day to day. These water filling stations encourage students and faculty not buy plastic bottles of water, soda, or juice.

Plastic bottles of any kind are not good for the environment. Bottled water alone produces around 1.5 million tons of plastic waste every year. In the process of production and transport of plastic bottles fossil fuels are wasted. Every year to produce plastic bottles it requires up to 47 million gallons of oil.

According to Food and Water Watch, 75 percent of the empty plastic bottles end up in landfills, lakes, streams, and oceans where they might never become fully decomposed. Plastic bottles also cause a huge risk to the marine life. Plastic waste is at a very high volume causing trash to circle in the world’s oceans. Birds and fish mistake the garbage for food leading them to death.
